Welcome to the
Department of Physics at the University of Hartford.
The Department
offers both a B.A. and a B.S. in Physics, which prepares
students for either graduate study or employment in a
technical field. In recent American Institute of Physics
surveys, 96% of the nation’s recipients of bachelor’s degrees
were pursuing graduate work or employed one year after
graduation. People with degrees in physics are working
in such varied fields as health sciences, telecommunications,
fiberoptics technology, laser applications, computer modeling,
science education, and patent law. In addition, the requirements
of the program are flexible enough to accommodate a variety
of minors.
One strength of our program is the opportunity to work
closely with faculty in research as an undergraduate. Current
areas of research include computational physics, geophysics,
nuclear astrophysics, fundamentals of quantum physics, and
pedagogical advancement. This provides a wide range of
opportunities for students to become involved in a research
project. Recent and current students have carried out projects
on campus and at Yale University, Duke University, Los Alamos
National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and
research centers overseas. There are also opportunities to
be involved in internships with Connecticut technology companies,
thus gaining valuable experience while earning an income.
For those advanced majors interested in graduate school
or in careers in education, we offer opportunities to teach
introductory laboratories under the guidance of full-time
faculty.
Our home is in
Dana Hall, which was renovated as part of the Integrated
Science, Engineering, and Technology (ISET) Complex. The
Department is very closely linked with the Departments
of Mathematics and Computer Science, which allows both
the faculty and students opportunities for cross-disciplinary
work.
